Los Angeles decided to build a subway beneath Wilshire Blvd. Future seemed bright. They had years to prep for hosting the Olympics. Building underground mass transport and getting buses off the street to alleviate traffic seemed like a good idea. But the massive construction project is taking an excruciatingly slow time and has irreparably harmed local businesses and made traffic and parking sheer hell. Then covid hit and crushed businesses. Some of the retailers like Rite Aid went out of business and closed stores everywhere, not just mid Wilshire. The homeless use the unattended, automated subway to move around and occupy areas they never went to before, and nobody seems to have a solution to get them off the street. Organized retail theft levied a further toll on local businesses. One of the biggest factors was covid, and the way it shut down office work for so long. With everybody telecommuting and nobody working in the offices along the Miracle Mile, the shops and restaurants have no customers. Covid really was a blow to a lifestyle and way of life and commercial and social history. Iconic LA locations that made the city an attraction won't be here if Olympic visitors come. It's painful to see. The public transportation system development has also devastated and ruined other iconic areas like Little Tokyo. My attitude is there have been hard times during other periods of history; we are not immune. We need to keep working to make things better and support each other. LA is still a wonderful place with so much to offer. The bar and restaurant scene in Koreatown is vibrant in the midst of all that mid Wilshire construction. The social and intellectual hubs of the Academy Museum and LACMA are at ground zero in the middle of the redevelopment, and they are thriving with wonderful events every day and night of the week. I believe in fighting for a better future. We can overcome the economic devastation and social turmoil left behind by covid. Be positive and supportive. Stop spreading hate and negativity and trashing our country. Electing an insane fascist wanna be dictator president will not make things better. He didn't build a wall when he was in office, and he won't rebuild LA. Support human rights, reproductive rights, social justice and keep Social Security funded. We don't need Christian Nationalism, we just need to cherish and practice old beliefs like faith, hope and charity.

The reason is ONLINE SHOPPING. All the people mentioning Gavin Newsom, California being liberal.. what does it have to do with politics? nothing. This is happening all over the country. You expect the world to remain the same with new technologies, artificial intelligence and how the world functions? Of course not. Humanity is changing rapidly and how we do things too. Reasons why this is happening 1- Online Shopping! It was not as popular and during the pandemic it forced people to shop online and got them introduced to it. It remained as such after the pandemic was over. People prefer to buy online and stores prefer to close brick and mortar because they no longer have overhead costs. 2- TEMU and all other cheap Chinese manufacturers - Excluding the rich or expensive stores, the masses buy cheap priced products. These chinese products were sold by third parties who bought wholesale in China and re-sold in brick and mortar stores at a higher price. People did not have access to these chinese products directly from China, but now they do! TEMU and other stores sell directly, killing all middle men (small shop owners, brick mortar stores of any type of products) most products were already made in China but people did not buy directly from Chinese stores. China sells at CHEAP prices and USA stores can no longer compete or sell at all (anything) and producing other products (not made in China) is too expensive. So essentially all stores closed because most products are chinese made and people just buy online from China directly through online shopping. Clothing, shoes, haircare, accessories, supplies etc... all stores were killed by online shopping stores like Temu. 3- REMOTE WORKING - During the pandemic most people had to work from home, therefore, after the pandemic most corporations, businesses kept it that way because they no longer had to pay for office rent. They decided to cut costs by having their employees work remotely. That is why you see a lot of office space. This lead to a lot of people being able to LEAVE those cities and travel. That means less people in those areas to shop and so on.

I once visited a mall in a city in a "red" state in 1982 and 10 years later I came back to that city and that mall I visited in 1982 was completely closed. The biggest culprit is AMAZON and the corona crisis, which made us buy even more online and from Amazon.

I was in SFO in Market street in September 2023 and it was full of cars and it was full of people, also in the Bart station. I saw only 1 "zombie" standing in the Bart station in Market street and 1 possible d**g user in the car of the Bart train that I took from the airport to Market street. I ate in a Subway not far and across from the old Southern Pacific building. If I am not wrong is the building on the left of this short movie the Sheraton Palace hotel, now a Marriott hotel. That there is a problem in SFO I will an can believe; SFO in 2023 is not the same as the SFO from 1986 when I was there for the first time and again in 2006. But I think that some shorts and other movies are spreading some false news. In every big city in the world there are people who are homeless, in some cities more than in other cities. homeless. Usually homeless people aren't the problem though certain young people who steal (some of whom are drug users).

This is thanks to cooperate greed like pharmaceutical companies. That's a shame. Other point: you need to criminalize consume of hard drugs and some right now legal opiates: need to be banned. The other point: there needs to be affordable communal housing. Without affordable housing in areas where jobs are present , you sent the people either on the streets or in areas where there are no jobs.

Proud to say the mall near my house is thriving. Not enough room for new growth. But they figure out a way! Shopping in person is so much fun. I like to see and feel what I’m buying. Sad to see a once beautiful, thriving city dying…and tragic knowing it was done deliberately and with malice.

Progressive have won their culture battle with "rich business". Rich merchants now gone, so SF waits for progressive socialist government stores to provide city shopping needs. Wonderful opportunity for new cannabis growth industry to get these vacant storefronts with state loans. A socialist cannabis store is simply a public drug store that replaces private Walgreen's.😅

Another great street report Leo. These entire closed areas are simply no longer for business risk or investment. Businesses who lost big are certainly not coming back to bad memories. It's clear when so many business side by side close, it is not good business environment. Burnt out property is condemned to no occupancy for long time. Why fix it and for who ? City council is so out of touch....good luck with that.

Incredibly, I do not believe my eyes. I never thought that this is possible in America. In Russia, a continuous construction, and at the same time for a year now I can not find a room for rent to expand my business, everything is busy, cosmic prices, high competition. There are no problems with safety and vandals, there is only one problem - to find real estate for rent.
